Dyslexia

SEND Consultancy - Dyslexia Assessment

What is Dyslexia?

Whilst definitions of dyslexia do vary, I use The British Dyslexia Association definition (2010) which has adopted the definition of dyslexia which was included in the Rose Review (2009):

Dyslexia is a learning difficulty that primarily affects the skills involved in accurate and fluent word reading and spellingCharacteristic features of dyslexia are difficulties in phonological awareness, verbal memory and verbal processing speed.

Dyslexia occurs across the range of intellectual abilities. It is best thought of as a continuum, not a distinct category, and there are no clear cut-off points. Co-occurring difficulties may be seen in aspects of language, motor co-ordination, mental calculation, concentration and personal organisation, but these are not, by themselves, markers of dyslexia. A good indication of the severity and persistence of dyslexic difficulties can be gained by examining how the individual responds or has responded to well-founded intervention.

Pre16 Diagnostic Assessment

In order to carry out a Diagnostic Dyslexia Assessment firstly background information is collected from the family and school. Then a face-to-face assessment is carried out at an agreed location. It is important that the best environment is chosen, which could be the pupil’s home, assessor’s home or another agreed location. The assessment takes around three hours and a wide range of tests will be used to gain an understanding of the child’s learning profile. Reports are written with SpLD Assessment Standards Committee (SASC) guidelines. Following the assessment, a detailed report is written. An online follow-up consultation is included in the price if required and onward referrals can be made.

Cost: From £450
A deposit of £50 is required when the booking is confirmed, and the remaining fee is due on the day of the assessment. Please contact me via the form below for an exact cost, which depends on several variables, including location of assessment.

Post-16 Diagnostic Assessment

Background information is collected prior to assessment. Then a face-to-face conversation and assessment is carried out at an agreed location. It is important that the best environment is chosen, so this can be discussed. Assessment for dyslexia at post-16 can include identification of cooccurring characteristics of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD/Dyspraxia), so sometimes may take slightly longer than 3 hours. Reports are written with SpLD Assessment Standards Committee (SASC) guidelines.

Assessment at post-16, can mean students may qualify for Disabled Students Allowance (DSA) which provides funding towards equipment and support in higher education.

Cost: From £475
A deposit of £50 is required when the booking is confirmed, and the remaining fee is due on the day of the assessment. Please contact me via the form below for an exact cost, which depends on several variables, including location of assessment and other needs being investigated.
